The IRS has launched a new Tax Compliance Report that allows taxpayers to easily verify and share their federal tax compliance status. The report may be useful when applying for a loan, job, government benefit, government contract, or other service requiring proof of tax compliance.
For individuals and sole proprietors, the IRS issues Letter 6201, while businesses receive Letter 6574. The report provides an overall status of Compliant, Noncompliant, or Compliance Issue and shows whether required federal tax returns were filed, whether returns were filed late, whether taxes remain unpaid, and certain other compliance matters.
The report is designed to provide only the information necessary to establish tax compliance. Unlike a tax return or detailed transcript, it does not disclose income, dependents, or filing status. It also provides broader historical coverage than a traditional tax transcript, including filing information for multiple prior years.
A significant feature of the new report is digital authentication. Individual reports downloaded through the IRS Individual Online Account contain an IRS-issued digital certificate that allows financial institutions, government agencies, and other recipients to confirm that the document is authentic and has not been altered.
Taxpayers should provide the original PDF downloaded from the IRS. A screenshot, scanned copy, or document created using “Print to PDF” will not retain the digital authentication.
The new Tax Compliance Report provides taxpayers with a convenient way to demonstrate their federal tax compliance without providing an entire tax return or disclosing unnecessary financial information.
